This is part of article series entitled: Real Estate Agent Personal Branding: Learning form American Idol. It is a fun and easy way to learn the principles of personal branding. You do not have to be an Idol fan to enjoy!
Imitation vs. Interpretation
In luxury real estate marketing the tried and true fundamentals still work. For example, rapidly returning phone calls and emails, staying in touch with your data base, remembering birthdays, giving great closing gifts will always help to build a successful practice. But, what is your personal interpretation of these fundamentals, your unique brand of executing these basics? Are you an imitator or do you offer your own artistic interpretation of the fundamentals?
Some of the contestants on American Idol this season have been in search of their authentic brand signal. Anoup was off his signal when he imitated the same style as the original artists' version of Caught Up (Usher). Because it was an imitation, it came across to the judges as a "wannabee" performance, rather than a personal, artistic interpretation of the same song.
Imitation may be known as the sincerest form of flattery. However, interpretation is taking the established form and pushing it in new dimensions. This was evident in Khris' performance of "Ain't No Sunshine, When She Is Gone!" A 30 year old song became new again. You can clearly distinguish the difference between imitation and artistic interpretation by listening to these two performances on the American Idol website.
Study what your competition does when it comes to executing the fundamentals of building a solid luxury real estate marketing practice. If they are market leaders, you can count on the fact that they have been consistent in applying their winning formula. But, do not imitate their style. Create your own style. Be creative. Be authentic. Think of yourself as an artist. Interpret the fundamentals in your own way. Discover your own inimitable brand signal.
